The Butterfly Alphabet

Hello Lovelies!

I'm so sorry to have been away from this blog! Puff! I suddenly disappeared!

What happened is that i got very very very ill. But i don't want you and me to get depressed about that. Let me just tell you I feel better already and that i'll do my best to be back online and post as often as possible.

The last post I had in mind last time i logged in here was about the amazing story of the Butterfly Alphabet.

One crazy scientist and nature photographer, whose name i'll find for you later through Google, once noticed a perfectly formed letter "F" on a butterfly's wing he was studying. The scientist' name is Kjell Sandved, by the way.

Kjell then began wondering, if a perfect "F" exists, why not look for an "A" and a "B" and a "C", etc...? And so he set sail around the world for over 25 years and the whole magnificent alphabet he found on butterflies' wings.

And then he wondered about numbers. And he found the arabic numbers from 0 to 9, perfectly visible on butterflies wings!

Such are the wonders of nature...

now i'm off to find you links, and pictures and the name of this scientist...
Kjell's story, as well as beautiful posters of the Butterfly Alphabet can be found here.

So here's my new piece... Mmmh, there's something wrong with blogger and i just can't upload it... You can see it on flickr though, right here. Until I fix things!

Fixed ! Here it is :

My new piece of art has the same setting as the tea scene pictured above, except it's a "Tea Scene in Blue, Orange and Green".

New Work : "la cigale demoiselle"

Hello lovelies!

I have been working on several insect drawings lately, and I'm happy to tell you they will appear this week in my Etsy shop.

Here is a preview:

I have found my inspiration for this special cicada ("cigale" in French) in a book called "Métamorphoses : le monde fascinant des insectes", which could be translated into: "Metamorphosis: The Fascinating World of Insects".

This book is a treasure to me, as it is not available anymore. It displays old plates and drawings of insects of all kind, all taken from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF)... It is a truly beautiful book.

Let me add alittle note about my work process.
I take these wonderful old-fashioned drawings and make my own contemporary interpretation of them, with ink, paper and some white gouache, on watercolor paper. And in this case, some pencil for the tiniest, daintiest details of the wings of the cicada.

I hope you enjoyed this little preview and behind-the-scenes post.

Have a nice day!

Tea with Jjjjound.com

Hello lovelies!

Sorry For Not Blogging much this week! But I have reasons... Sometimes an artist can simply feel tired or blue (or both)...

Fortunately, I have visited the infamous jjjjound.com blog, and I've found plenty of inspiration there!

First, I sat down for a nice cup of tea, of course...

Then, I had a look at all those fab ateliers and artists' studios. I don't have one at the moment, only a table that doubles as my computer desk. But look for yourself:

Then, they were beautiful still lives of drawing material:

The blogger behind "jjjjound" has been strangely obsessed with bicycles lately...

I'm more into art and melancholy...

though I'm not letting that dark cloud invade my soul...

and make me say "I hate everybody" !

I'd rather look at the marvels of nature...

and simply... go back to drawing! Let's grab a blank page and doodle away!

or get into the thick of it and paint!

Talk soon,

-Vic

btw, I just found out that I'm 59% geek. This comes as no surprise, though.

Happiness is a Butterfly

FFF

Hello Lovelies!

"FFF" means "Friday Flickr Fix" - it is the name of a flickr image group. This group is no longer active, but I keep liking making mosaics and getting my weekly FFF.

Here's my new mosaic, made out of two of my fave photos (not by me, but from my photostream).

Enjoy!
